Setting Up Your Keen2 Device

Unboxing Keen2

Charge the Bracelet

A purple Extra Charging Base: Keen2 with a clock on it.

Keen2's box contains the Keen2, a small insert that directs you to the setup page, and the charger.

Keen2 takes 2-3 hours to fully charge, and the battery life lasts approximately 2 days with normal use. We recommend charging your Keen2 every night.

Download the App

Go to Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download the Keen2 app.

iOS users:  Devices require iOS 13.0 or higher. Please have Bluetooth turned on, and allow “Keen2” to find Bluetooth devices and send notifications (when prompted).

Android users:  Devices require a minimum of version 6.0 (Marshmallow). Please have Bluetooth turned on, and allow “Keen2” to find Bluetooth devices and send notifications (when prompted). You DO NOT NEED TO "PAIR" the bracelet via Bluetooth® settings. Please close the message without entering a code.

Using Keen2 to Detect Your Behavior

Begin to Navigate the App

Create an account. Once logged in, you can use the purple menu bar at the bottom of the screen to switch between modules (informative content), band settings, manual instance entry, and dashboard (contains your data).

You will add a gesture to your bracelet in the “Add Gesture” module of the “Using Keen2” section. (But read the next step beforehand)

Train Your Bracelet in "Add Gesture" Module

The “Add Gesture” module  walks you through the most common gestures we see that fall under the categories of hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting.

If you don't see your gesture as a preset behavior, use our custom gesture training guide to set up your own gesture.

Start with ONE Bracelet and ONE Gesture

HabitAware knows how excited you might be to get started!

Start with:

  • ONE bracelet
  • ONE gesture
  • for ONE week

For best practice, we ask you to start with one bracelet and one gesture, as you begin to learn what it feels like to wear a Keen2 bracelet and how to interact with the app.

Begin to Use Keen2 as Your "Cue" to Check-in and Redirect

Charge Keen2 every night; wear it everyday. Remove Keen2 for swimming, showering, and bathing.

When Keen2 vibrates, pause, and do a quick check in.

  • Where are you?
  • What time is it?
  • How are you feeling, emotionally and physically?

And then ask yourself: is there anything I need right now, in this moment, to make myself feel more comfortable? Your BFRB is a signal, and the goal of Keen2 is to help you tune into listening for, and understanding that signal.

Keep your data clean by pressing Keen2's side button when you get a false vibration.

Come up with a list of 3-5 easy replacement strategies that you can reach for, and start implementing them when Keen2 vibrates. Some examples could be: take a sip of water, stretch quickly, use the bathroom, or grab a fidget toy. Give them a try. Don't work? Try different ones. Your goal is to choose strategies that are easy to reach for.

If you are a parent helping your child or teen setup your Keen2 bracelet, we offer a guide for parents on supporting your child while they start their Keen2 journey.

When you are used to wearing Keen2 and are happy with your first gesture, you can add a second gesture by going through the "Add Gesture" module again. Your Keen2 can hold up to 4 gestures. Visit our accuracy guide to learn how.

Using the Dashboard to Read Your Data

Access the dashboard by pressing the bar graph icon on the bottom bar menu.

From there you will be able to see a general overview of your episode data. To get more information, tap into a specific data point.

Your data is divided into episodes. This lets you see, at a glance, how intense a specific time of day was for you. Tap into an episode to add context.

Add context like your location, activity, and emotion, as well as any bonus information you'd like to log in the journal. The more context you add, the better data you have to begin identifying patterns and trends.

Keen2 Upkeep

How to Adjust Keen2's Accuracy (This is crucial!)

You can adjust your gestures on the Band Settings page in your app.

Please view our Improving Keen2 Accuracy page if you are having issues with Keen2 vibrating at the wrong time.

How to Delete False Positives

Press that button on the side of Keen2 after it vibrates and it won’t be added to your data.

This is useful for interventions, or false alarms.

An “intervention” is when you catch yourself about to engage in the unwanted hair pulling, skin picking or nail biting and Keen2 catches it too (vibrates) BUT you do something else instead. Celebrate the moment by pushing the button on Keen2's bracelet to remove that from your vibration count for the day, and maintain your in-app streak!

Keen2 - much like all of us - isn’t perfect. We aim for 80% accuracy. So, when Keen2 vibrates at a time where you aren’t doing your behavior, this is a false alarm. Just press the button on Keen2’s bracelet to remove that vibration. That way, it won’t be included in the data on your Keen2 app.

This icon means the vibration has successfully been removed from your daily tally:

You can also use the button to Factory Reset Keen2. This will erase and return Keen2 to its factory settings including erasing any trained gestures. The history of past data will remain in the app. To initiate, press and hold the Keen2 side button. You will feel an immediate vibration upon pressing, and a second vibration after 10 seconds. Let go of the button after the second vibration. Your bracelet is now back to factory settings

Understanding Your BFRB

Use the Vibration as a "Self-Care Alarm"

Your BFRB is not your hands sabotaging you; they're trying to tell your something. Keen2's vibration is a reminder of that.

When Keen2 vibrates, ask yourself:

  • How am I feeling?
  • Does my body need fuel?
  • Am I tense? Do I need a deep breath?

Your BFRB is a response from your subconscious mind, trying to "even out" your nervous system. Keen2 is telling you "hey, we want to balance our nervous system in a different way."

If Keen2's vibration feels annoying, remember to ground yourself in the thought that it's vibrating because you deserve to take care of yourself, and now is a good moment to do that.

Separate Yourself from Blame

When Keen2 vibrates, it is not asking you to scold yourself, and it is not saying you're doing anything wrong.

It's simply saying "Hey, it seems like you need something right now. Let's pause and figure out what we can do, in this moment, to make you more comfortable."
