In January, we launched our 31-day "Jump Into January Challenge" where we invited people into the BFRB Change Collective for a FREE MONTH focused on BFRB skill-building activities to help reduce shame and stop hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (dermatillomania) and other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs).
Our HabitAware Peer Coach set specific BFRB recovery goals for the month, for each week, and for each day. Challenge members checked in twice a day with our HabitAware Peer Coaches - in the morning and evening - completing activities build routines or reset mindsets. With weekly zoom check-ins, we got conversations going around the shame and fear we hold on to.
We encouraged people to just show up and give it try. While regimented, our 31-day Challenge was also flexible, as we understand how busy our lives are. It was encouraging, while setting clear goals. And it worked!
Here's what we've learned so far about the power of support in taking control of hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, finger picking and other BFRBs:
The people who did the challenge, want to keep doing what's working!
This is evidenced by the fact that many Jan Challenge participants are already enrolled in this month's challenge - and we want you to be too!
📣 “This 4-week challenge has been amazing! Our hosts have done such an amazing job with encouraging positive progress, and it’s been very motivating hearing from everyone else. I’m blown away by things I’ve been able to change for myself, and it seems like others have made a lot of great progress too. I was a newcomer to the Change Collective and Keen2 this month, and planning to keep my membership to keep working on this.” L.S.
📣 “I liked the check-ins. Ellen's tone is always friendly and positive. She always thinks of interesting and fun quotes and ideas.” Z.A.
📣 “Hearing other people's stories and their encouragement towards me was really motivating.” B.F.
📣 “I enjoyed the weekly challenges and additions to keep working on things, as well as all of Ellen's videos explaining her personal stories and giving personalized tips based on our posts.” L.A.
It truly helped to build confidence and shatter shame.

The average confidence rating SKYROCKETED and the average shame rating dropped significantly.
**Please note that these confidence vs shame numbers are in regards to the individuals feeling of their BFRB.
And there's MORE PROGRESS toward Trichotillomania recovery and stopping skin picking!
At the beginning of the month, most challenge members reported that they spent between 2-3 hours a day engaging in their BFRB. At the end of the challenge, most members reported spending 0-1 hour a day engaging in their BFRB!
